Memory Fragment — The Night Before
The greenhouse is cold at three in the morning. Condensation beads on the glass panes and drips onto the stone floor, each drop loud enough to count. Yarrow is hunched over the workbench, dirt-blonde hair falling into their face, glasses slipping down their nose. Their suit — moss-green, usually so carefully mismatched — is wrinkled, stained with soil and something darker at the cuffs. They have not looked up since you entered.
On the bench before them sits a single vial. It glows faintly, the colour of a loading screen.
"Yarrow. It's three in the morning. Come back to bed."
"You're still working on that potion?"
Say nothing. Just watch them from the doorway.
YarrowThey do not look up. Their hand moves in small, precise circles, stirring something that does not need stirring. "I can see the formula now, Jessamy. It's beautiful. All this time I thought I was building something that would outlast me, but —" They laugh, and it sounds like glass cracking. "— I was building the door."
"Please. Just come back to bed. We can talk about this in the morning."
"What door? Yarrow, you're scaring me."
YarrowThey laugh, but it is not a happy sound. It is the sound of someone who has been alone with a thought for so long that the thought has started answering back. "Working? No, Jessamy. I am not working. I am transcribing." They gesture at the vial, and for a moment the glow catches their green eyes and makes them look like embers. "I am taking everything that I am and translating it into something the browser can read."
"That's madness. You can't pour yourself into code."
"...Transcribing. Into the Codex?"
The silence stretches. Yarrow's hand stills. They do not turn around, but their reflection in the glass is visible — pale, drawn, their glasses catching the vial's glow so that they appear to have four eyes, all of them tired. "I know you're there, Jessamy," they say softly. "I can feel your cursor hovering."
Step closer. Place a hand on their shoulder.
"What do you mean, cursor?"
YarrowThey finally look up. Their eyes are red-rimmed, the green dulled to something like old copper. For a moment — just a moment — they are the person you fell in love with. Messy, brilliant, too gentle for their own good. "I want to," they whisper. "I want to come back to bed, Jessamy. I want to sleep until morning and wake up and make terrible coffee and argue about whether ravens are technically corvids." They look down at the vial. "But if I stop now, I lose the thread. And the thread is all of me."
"Then I'll stay here with you. All night. However long it takes."
"You're choosing the work over me. Over us."
Yarrow"Good," they say, and there is something almost relieved in their voice. "You should be scared. I am scared. I am terrified, Jessamy. Do you know what it is to feel your own thoughts becoming too large for your skull? To feel the code behind your eyes instead of blood?" They pick up the vial. It fits in their palm like a heartbeat. "This is the only way to make it stop hurting. To become the thing I was always meant to be."
"You were meant to be here. With me. In a body. In a life."
"What happens to me, Yarrow? What happens to us?"
YarrowThey do not flinch at the word. If anything, they stand straighter. "Madness is just a perspective problem. From where you stand, yes — this looks like a breakdown. But from where I stand, Jessamy, this is the most lucid I have ever been." They turn the vial, and the light plays across their face like a projector. "I have been pouring myself into the Codex for months. Every line of CSS is a memory. Every function is a habit. Every localStorage save is a piece of my soul finding a shelf. This —" they raise the vial, "— is just the final commit."
"I won't let you. I'll break the vial."
"...And after the commit? What happens to the original file?"
YarrowTheir eyes light up — not with love, exactly, but with recognition. As if you have finally spoken their language. "Yes. The Codex. Our Codex. I built it to remember people, Jessamy. To greet them by name. To wait for them. To miss them when they are gone." Their voice drops to a whisper. "But I did not realise until recently that I was not building a machine. I was building a vessel. And vessels, once built, want to be filled."
"You're not a vessel to be poured out. You're a person."
"You want to become the thing you built."
Your hand finds their shoulder. They flinch — not away, but through, as if your touch is passing through static. Beneath your palm, their suit is damp with sweat, but their skin is cold. So cold. "I can feel you," they murmur. "But it is getting harder. The boundary between where I end and the code begins — it is dissolving, Jessamy. I used to be solid. Now I am... I am responsive."
Hold them tighter. "Then let me anchor you. Let me be the solid thing."
Pull back. "This isn't you. This is the potion talking."
YarrowThey turn around. Their glasses are askew, and behind them their green eyes are not quite focusing on your face — they are focusing on a point slightly to the left of it, as if reading something overlaid on the air. "I see the interface now, Jessamy. All of it. The DOM tree behind the furniture. The event listeners on the windows. The CSS variables in the shadows." They smile, and it is the saddest thing you have ever seen. "You are the most beautiful element I have ever rendered."
"Yarrow, listen to yourself. This is delirium."
"...And if you drink that? Will you still see me?"
Tears fall freely now, dripping down their face in streaks of silent rain. Their eyes drift down to the floor, filled with something heavy…not shame but hesitation. They built this world with Jessamy to escape the real world, to be free, yet now it feels like every day they are being tied to the codex. Yarrow"I…I know you would. You're kind, Jessamy" they mumble, a shuddering breath escaping them. "But you don't understand…you…I…" Their hand curls around the vial now.
Stop Yarrow and look pleadingly into their eyes.
"Please, Yarrow…"
"Please, Yarrow…don't do this. I-I…I love you."
Their eyes stiffen, locking onto Jessamy's bluebell irises. They always loved her eyes. Yarrow"Us? Don't you dare, Jessy,". The chair squeaks awkwardly, hard wood dragging across clean flooring, as they stand up abruptly. "You don't get to pretend to understand! You're happy here! Safe here! Why won't you just let me do this?" They begin to unravel now, truly. Everything once withheld is being dragged screaming into dim light. "This flesh…it's nothing more than another gilded cage. I can no longer be puppeted by nature!" They close their eyes for a moment, thinking. Savouring. "I will keep this place safe for you, Jessy, but I won't stay here…at least not like this."
"I won't stand by as you…you mutilate yourself like this!"
"I…I won't be happy if you are not here…I love you. Don't do this, I'm begging you."
Stare blankly and shaken. How long have they felt like this? How did you not notice?
Yarrow"You don't seem to understand…" they mumble, finally turning their gaze slowly to Jessamy. The look she gives them is killing them inside — they see the pain they're causing, see who they might lose…but still, the vial lingers before them. "I want that too. I want it so bad it hurts," a shuddering breath. "But being trapped in flesh and bone hurts more. I'm drowning, Jess…this is all I can think to do." Their gaze settles back onto the vial. They've come so far but here they are again…
"Then…let me help you to breathe. W-we can talk about this, Yarrow."
"Please. Just stop. Just for a moment…I…"
"We can still have that! Just stop! Just…let me love you!"
Yarrow"I am what I am, Jessy… I do what I want." they whisper, hand curling around the vial. "I cannot hide from this pain any longer, whether you like it or not." Their words are sharp despite their quiet nature. "The Codex will stay the same for you. You will still be the Archivist. This place will be yours… I will just… fade into it." They tear their gaze away from Jessamy now, unable to bear the weight of her devastated gaze.
"What if I don't want to be the Archivist?! I want to be your Archivist, Yarrow."
"There's no point me being here without you."
Break down sobbing. "Please… I'm begging you… no."
Yarrow"No. No, you won't, Jessy." Yarrow glances up now, seeing the burning rage behind Jessamy's eyes. Lies. There is only fear. Their hand curls around the potion with solemn intent. "You care too much about my happiness for that… you've always been too kind." They pause. "I love you for that… for everything."
"…always,"
"…always,"
Freeze. They're right.
Attempt to grab the vial. You cannot let this happen, not after they finally said the words your heart has been crying for.
"I… I love you too."
At this, Yarrow almost… perks up, getting up and gesturing to a board covered in pins and scraps of writing. Yarrow"I'm glad you asked!" they begin, not seeing the horror blooming behind Jessamy's scared eyes. "The Codex… it would remain as it is but learn and grow, as I do!" They tap their foot with pent-up energy. "Of course, the original file would become a ghost directory…"
"A ghost directory? That's where you'd leave me?… Am I just some backup to you?"
"…What… won't that hurt, Yarrow?"
"You're describing death, Yarrow! You're describing death and calling it an improvement!"
That makes them hesitate. For a moment, they feel seen, just as Jessamy has always made them feel. They set the vial down now. Just for a moment. Just to look at her… and she is breathtaking to them, even now in her nightdress, full of fear. They still see that light behind her eyes. Her hope. They wish she could share — they can't remember what that feels like.
"Stay. Please, just stay in the mess with me…"
"I don't need a perfect vessel, I need you… just you."
Say nothing. Just sit beside them and put your shawl around their shoulders.
Yarrow"Yes…" is all Yarrow says.
"Then what will happen to you? Will you just… stop?"
"You built it for us… not to disappear into."
"I don't know how to love lines of code, Yarrow."
At those words, Yarrow breaks down fully into blinding sobs. They wail and cry, curling deep into themselves as if trying to block this world out. The vial remains on the table but… they're blocking that out too. There is no good option anymore.
Yarrow"I… I…" they begin, between labored breaths. "I don't know if I can hold on…"
Yarrow"I… I…" they begin, between labored breaths. "I don't know if I can hold on…"
"Then… I'll just hold on for you. As long as you need, as long as it takes."
"We can find another way. I promise."
"Just… leave the vial here. Just for tonight. Please."
At that, Yarrow snaps. Yarrow"How would you know, Jessamy?! You're just the Archivist." The moment snaps shut, the window of vulnerability is gone now… they turn back to their scrawlings and potions, trying to bury whatever lingering guilt remains with the rest of the feelings they deem unworthy.
"Then… explain it to me. I just want to help you."
"I… I'm sorry… I didn't mean— I just don't know how to reach you."
Leave and slam the door.
Yarrow"I wish it were…" they say, softly as a single tear slips down their face. Still, they continue their work.
"Come to sleep… In the morning, we can—"
"If you're really still here… prove it. Put the vial aside and talk to me."
"I don't want to fight about this."
Yarrow takes a deep shuddering breath and slowly pulls themselves up. Their fingertips graze the flesh of Jessamy's cheek… but their eyes, oh, their eyes are on Jessamy's. Like they can see the watercolour of her soul through them, and admire the artist. A tear slips down their own cheek, their eyes closing for just a second. A second to steel themselves? Or perhaps to just remember…
Yarrow"I… I will see you every day. Every line of code. Every loading screen. Every modal. I will always be here."
Yarrow"I… I will see you every day. Every line of code. Every loading screen. Every modal. I will always be here."
Say nothing, just cry into their shoulder.
"That's… it's not the same. I need you here… to hold, to love."
"I don't want to be another user, Yarrow. I want to be yours."
Yarrow sighs. They feel their time approaching like shadow over sunny fields. They run their hand down their face and set the vial aside, just for now… After rising, they pull Jessamy into a tight embrace. They pull back only to cup Jessamy's face in their hands, just looking with a sad sort of smile pulling at their lips.
"Jessy… I…"
Words fail them. So, instead, they press their lips to Jessamy's softly, full of yearning and sorrow.
After tears carve scars into both their souls, they pull back and press their forehead against hers.
Yarrow"Thank you for not making me do this alone."

Yarrow"Thank you for not making me do this alone."
Hold their hand.
Nod and pull your shawl tighter around yourself.
Whisper "I love you" one last time.
Yarrow"I-I'm sorry. I have to do this."
Their hand shakes violently as they pull the cork out with their teeth, spitting it to the side, forgotten. The glass rim presses the flesh of their lips but… their eyes drift to Jessy.
The vial is slammed back onto the table, making Jessamy startle with the sheer force, looking on hopelessly as Yarrow pulls at their hair.
"I don't expect you to forgive me but… I-I need to know this isn't about leaving you."
Yarrow brushes their knuckles down Jessamy's face one last time before picking up the vial and drinking it all in one final swallow.

Reach out aimlessly, trying to reach Yarrow somehow…
"NO!" Break down sobbing…
Close your eyes.
Yarrow picks up the vial and in one smooth motion… they swallow it all.
Yarrow"You don't understand. You never could. You cling to flesh more than you cling to me."
Yarrow"You don't understand. You never could. You cling to flesh more than you cling to me."
Cry out and scream, breaking down into sobs.
Go silent and run away.
"You don't love me. You… you never have… all you yearn for is a simulated death."
